Diagnosis

Malaria should be in the differential diagnosis of ANYONE who presents with FEBRILE ILLNESS in, or having recently left a malarious area
Use thick and thin films

Thick film - sensitive but low resolution, tells you malaria is present

Treatment
Complicated Falciparum - IV artesunate (gold standard) or IV quinine (second best since causes hypoglycaemia so monitor sugar levels)
Uncomplicated Falciparum - Oral riamet or oral quinine. Add doxycycline as 2nd agent to treat undiscovered/untreated malaria
