Props
Props purpose and function:
Props are used to make a production more believable. Props can be used to help show the time period and setting of a production, and can be used by the actors to advance the plot.
Hand Props: Items used directly by the actors during the show such as letters and telephones.
Set Props: Items used to create set such as furniture, lights, set pictures and tables.
Decorative Props: Details on stage such as paintings, newspaper, and curtains.
A prop or property is any object held or used by an actor for use in furthering the plot or story line of a theatrical production. If the item is not touched by a performer for any reason it is simply a set decoration.
Sound Effects
Sound Effects are sounds other than speech or music that are made artificially for use in a play, movie, or other broadcast production.
Sound Effects Purpose and Function.
Sound Effects are used to create illusion. If the audience hears jungle sounds they are more likely to by into the illusion that the actor/actress is in a jungle.
Sound effects are used to Simulate Reality. A gunfight looks more real when you can hear gun shots.
Sound effects are used to emphasize or express an action, mood, or feeling.
Scenery
Backdrops, hangings, furnishings, and other accessories on a theater stage or on a film or television set that represent the location of a scene.
Purpose and function of Scenery
To provide physical objects that the performers may need in order to execute actions in the performance (chairs, doors, diving boards, etc.)
To help establishe the "atmosphere" or mood of the play
To help define the " place and time" of the production
To establishe the limits of the playing space
Costumes
Costume:
The clothing and accessories that will be worn by the actor/actress during their performance.
Costume purpose and function
Costumes help create the visual aesthetic of a show.
Costumes can show the time period and setting of a production.
Costumes can help show the status, occupation, culture, etc. of a character.
Costumes help describe the characters and their personalities to the audience.
Lighting
Light directed at a stage, set, area, etc. to illuminate the, actors, scenery, props, set, etc.
Frunction and Purpose of lighting.
Lighting can show the time of day. Blues can show that it's night time while orange and red can suggest a sunrise.
The most important purpose for lighting is to illuminate the actors, scenery, set, etc. so the audience can see everything that's happening. Lighting can make the difference between high-quality or amateur-looking content.
Lighting tells the audience where to look.
Lightning can establish the mood of a scene. It can also show a characters emotion, red could show anger. Lighting could also describe temperature. Blue light could show that it's cold.
