According to Bourdieu’s thesis (Bourdieu 1984), one’s family background endows one with a particular volume of economic capital (money, wealth, etc.), social capital (networks and connections), and cultural capital (distinctive tastes, skills, and knowledge). Cultural consumption is, thus, characterised by a distinction effect, whereby class-related factors drive consumption patterns, which in turn symbolise status, reinforce class boundaries, and further legitimise certain forms of art.
