Injection Intramuscularly or intravenously
Mechanism of action
By increasing the concentration of adrenal cholesterol
Which is precursor for all steroid synthesis in the adrenal gland.
It rapidly stimulates the synthesis and release of the cortisol from the adrenal cortex
It promotes growth of the cells that produce cortisol.
Side effects
At risk of hypothalamic-pituitary-axis suppression
Irritability
Patient is more likely to have infections
Central obesity
Hyperthemia without infection
Indications
Used to treat epileptic spasm in infants
Treat acute exacerbations of multiple sclerosis
Has been used to test adrenal function
Treatment of acute episodes of psoriatic arthritis and rheumatic arthritis.
Contraindications
Patient has cushing's syndrome
Patient has peptic ulcers
Known hypersensitivity to ADCH
Patient has refractory heart failure
If a patient has allergic disorders such as astma
Storage
Store in a cool dry place
Away from the light
