Mechanism of action

Produce contractions of the smooth muscles of the fundus
to promote the ejection of milk.
Side effects
Water intoxication and hyponatremia
Uterine hyperstimulation
Tetanic contractions
Subarachnoid bleeding
Uterine spasms
Pelvic hematoma
Indications
Used to stop bleeding post delivery
Low dose is used to initiate treatment titrated upward if necessary
Used to initiate or augument labor
Often following the rapture of the membranes
Contraindications
Substantial cephalopelvic dispropotion
Unfavourable fetal position(transverse lie)
Early stages of pregnancy
Umbilical prolapse
Engaged fetal head
Storage
Away from the light
