Public weblogs may contain excessive amounts of ads because that is how they finance themselves. It is recommended to host a private weblog.
If the weblog is public it may be the target of internet trolls that have the sole purpose of disrupting the weblog.
There is always security concerns about it like if the discussions should be open to the public or just for the participants, if anonymity should be a factor in this type of technologies and the biggest of all is the question of what happen with the information once it is posted online.

Weblogs have many uses. For example it can be used as an extension for the material required in class, as a communicative medium with the students, to keep track of the students progress and much more.
