Muscle
1. External longitudinal
Superior 1/3: voluntary striated
Middle 1/3: voluntary striated/smooth
Inferior 1/3: smooth
2. Internal circular

Sphincters
Upper
Structure
Striated muscle sphincter, cricopharyngeus muscle
-
-
Lower
Location
Junction between oesophagus and stomoch
(gastro-oesohageal junction), T11 level
Function
Relaxed during oesophageal peristalsis to allow food entry
At rest, prevents reflux of acid gastric contents into oesoph
Structure
Marked by change from oesophageal to gastric mucosa
Physiological/functional sphincter, formed by
- oesoph enters stomach at acute angle
- intra-abdo oesoph compressed when +ve intra-abdo pressure
- the folds of gastric mucosa aid occlusion
- the right cruz of diaphragm has pinch-cock effect
-

Course
Descent
Laryngopharynx to superior mediastinum
Trachea anterior, T1-T4 posterior
Enters abdomen via oesophageal hiatus
(opening right cruz of diaphragm), T10 level
Termination
Stomach, T11 level
Origin
Neck, C6 level
Continuous with the laryngopharynx

Innervation
Oesophageal
plexus
Vagal trunks
Parasympathetic
Upper striated muscle and upper sphincter
supplied by fibres from nucleus ambiguus
Lower striated muscle and lower sphincter
supplied by fibres from dorsal motor nucleus
-
Definition
Fibromuscular tube, 25cm long,
transports food from pharynx to stomoch
