Air sampling
Chemical pollutants
- Nitrogen oxide
Produce from buring fuels, including petrol, diseal and coal
(cause acid rain, can make children suscepible to resprirtory diseases in winter)
- Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC)
Produce from air conditioning system and refridgerator
(leads to reduction of the ozon layer that expose earth to the harmful ultraviolent rays of the sun)
Biological pollutants
Source
- molds
- mildew
- bacteria
- dust mites
- cockroaches
Health effects
- sneezing
- fever
- coughing
[Allergic reaction]
- asthma
- allergic rhinitis
[Infectious illnesses]
- influenza
- chicken pox
How to overcome it?
- good ventilation (2 methods)
- Natural - open window
- Mechanical - exhaust, fan
How to control moulds?
- keep humidity lower than 50%
(control humidity)
-
Chemical
- Diffusion detector tubes
- Vapor monitor badge
- Personal air sampling pump
- hand held monitor
- fixed air monitor
How diffusion detector tubes is used?
- Consist of a glass tube with chemical reagent
- Break one end of the tube and place it in a tube holder
- The sample gas will react witht the chemicals causing a discoloration
- Determin using Time weighted average (TWA) or a Short term exposure limits (STEL)
- TWA is obtain by dividing the scale value by the total amont of time sampled in hours
-
