During the pre-Civil War era, people had to live within walking distance of their shops or jobs. Later, people were able to live miles from their jobs and commuted on horse-drawn streetcars.
Streetcars were eventually phased out by electric trolleys, elevated railroads, and subways. Upper and middle classes moved to streetcar suburbs to escape pollution, poverty, and crime.
