Palliative Care vs. Physician Assisted Suicide
Many individuals who are treated with palliative sedation never regain consciousness.
• This causes this treatment to have the same result as physician assisted suicide.
• However, though the result is the same, the intent between these two treatments will always be different.
• One is with the idea of ending a life while the other is meant to make the patient as comfortable as possible.
• If both can lead to ending a life, why is one legal while the other one remains outlawed in most places?
• There is a possibility of accidentally killing a patient due to over-medicating or sedating with palliative care/palliative sedation
Supporting a patient’s right to choose versus what appears morally right.
• Palliative care versus physician assisted suicide ultimately presents a situation that argues the difference between a patient’s right to choose, and what a practitioner feels is morally right.
• When I put myself in the shoes of the patient, I can completely understand the importance of them having the right to determine how and when they should die.
• However, when looking at the perspective of the doctor, I can understand how physician assisted suicide can seem morally wrong, especially since they are trained to do everything they can to keep the patient alive.
• I feel that this idea should matter to others because it is a choice that most will be faced with considering in their life.
• This is a decision that many people will be forced to make either for themselves, or a loved one, or both.
How can one be sure that palliative care/sedation takes away or minimizes a patient’s pain?
• Palliative care and sedation is used to relieve pain without ending a life.
• We are ultimately unsure how useful palliative care or sedation is in alleviating one’s pain, especially since most patients often pass away before being able to report if it helped or not.
• If palliative care is not able to succeed in relieving the patient’s pain, then what is the point of this care?
There are many contradicting opinions/views surrounding palliative care versus physician assisted suicide.
• some of these opinions revolve around religious beliefs
• some are focused more on the morality of these treatments
• I am focused on presenting this information in a non-biased way.
• I hope that by bringing these contradicting opinions together it will help people compare and contrast these treatments, and lead them to feel more comfortable with picking which treatment they agree with more.
It is important to understand the possible adverse reactions or side-effects with these two treatments.
• possibility of accidentally killing a patient due to over-medicating or sedating with palliative care- as stated earlier
• Side effects and adverse reactions are important to know about for any treatment that one may be considering.
• I believe that knowing about the possible adverse reactions and side effects is crucial in one being able to make a decision about what they support.
