Respiratory System By: Pavel Jacobo
Functions of Respiratory System
The function of the respiratory system is to deliver air to the lungs. Oxygen out in the air diffuses out of the lungs into the blood.
Anatomy of Respiratory Tract
The upper respiratory tract includes the nose and nasal passages the lower respiratory tract include the bronchi and trachea.
Organs of Respiratory Tracts
Upper - Nose, Nasal Passages, paranasal sinuses, and the pharynx
Lower - Trachea, bronchi, larynx, and bronchioles
Differences in Lunga
The right and left lungs differ in sizes accommodate other organs that encroach on the thoracic region. The right lung consists of 3 lobes and is shorter while the left lung has 2 lobes.
Breathing Mechanism
Breathing occurs when the contraction or relaxation of muscles around the lungs changes the total volume of air within the air passages, inspiration happens in certain muscles while experation happens in the diaphragm
Lung Capacity Terms
Residual Volume - the volume of unexpended air that remains in the lungs
Spirometry - the measurement of volume of air that a person can breathe in or out
Tidal Volume - the amount of air breathed in or out during normal respiration
Respirations
External - occurs in the lungs when oxygen diffuses into the lungs
Internal - occurs in the metabolizing tissues where oxygen diffuses out of the blood
Respiration Disorders
Tuberculosis - occurs when bacteria infects the lungs causing cough and pain in the chest
Lung cancer - mostly occurs when people smoke a lot which can result in lung transplant or death.
Pneumonia - Occurs when air sacs are filled with fluid resulting in difficulty in breathing
