If the symptoms are untreated, as the patient already has fluid filling in the lungs, it is likely death will occur if it is left untreated for a long time. Initially, if untreated, the pleura will become swollen, causing sharp pains with inhalation. If that swelling is not taken care of, infection will occur, which can lead to infected fluid called an empyema.
Because pneumonia originates in the lungs, it is vital that the condition is treated as soon as possible. The reason it is so important is because the lungs are directly linked to the cardiovascular system, which has the potential to spread the infection to the rest of the body, including the brain, if left untreated. Once any disease or viral infection reaches the brain, it almost always results in death.
