Regarding verbal language development, newborns are already capable of making sounds, such as crying and cooing. As the months go by and the infant grows and develops, the babies language capacities will develop from crying and cooing to acknowledging conversational turn-taking, either verbal or nonverbally, to babbling, using strings of both vowels and continents, to saying their first words within 9 to 16 months (Nixon & Gould, 1999).
