Characteristics of string instruments
They produce simple notes or specific sounds.
It allows to obtain harmonies(For song, harmony is the mechanism by which listening
analyzes the arrangement of specific tones, or overlays of tones.)
The sound is produced through vibrating the strings.
Strings are in a tense form from one point of the instrument to another.
Sounds are obtained by rubbing, plucking or percussion.
What is the string family
Orchestral family
Up to 60 musicians in the ensemble
Players in different sizes : the violin, the viola, the cello and the double bass
Stringed instruments or chordophones are musical instruments
Are there any limitations of each instruments?
Cello
Cello can only play one note at a time
Violin
Violin can’t play too low keys like double bass,
The lowest key in violin is only G3 but double bass can go down to E1 which is really different with violin.
-Violin always need to be tuned or else it will be out of tune.
Viola
f” (f5) is playable on a viola, but in order to perform it, you have to move to second position
Doublebass
Double bass can’t be easily carried like violin, because it it too big and heavy
Many people don’t play it since it is too hard to carry around.
It is more like a supporting instrument in a group performance which isn’t really eye catching
Double bass can’t play high pitches like violin and viola,
How does string instruments work ?
String instruments produce music from vibrating the strings.
The size, stress, and duration of the strings can change the pitch of the instruments.
