Remain Free from Injury, express will to live, discloses plan for suicide if present, and refrains from attempting suicide

Interventions
Prevention
activities that provide support, information and education to prevent suicide through a variety of community settings.
Treatment
Assess suicidal ideation status, and plan ( if patient has one)

Help patient develop six step safety plan which will include: warning signs, internal coping strategies, social settings, and people who provide distraction.
Also ask the patient to identify something important to them worth living for.

One-to-one nursing observation and interaction 24 hours a day if a patient has suicidal ideation or delusion ( if applicable )
Postvention
Focus on patient's thought and feelings, and do a thorough assessment
Make frequent efforts to reach out to individuals, especially on the most difficult anniversary dates, and talked about decease person with patient
Recommend community resources and survivor support groups and show empathy about the loss of someone to suicide.

DSM -5 Criteria
Suicidal behavior disorder was proposed as a new disorder for the DSM-5. In the end, suicidal behavior disorder was voted down, but was added to the manual in a section called “Conditions for Further Study.”
