MODULE 6 - PLANNING A LANGUAGE COMPONENT LESSON
PLANNING A
GRAMMAR LESSON
Approaches to
teaching grammar
Deductive approach: T gives the rules of the grammar point
Inductive approach: Ss work out the rules of the grammar point
Key skill
T should vary his/her approach to teaching grammar
What approach you use depends on Ss' learning style, needs, the nature of the language point and the need for variety in a program
Teaching grammar inductively: Teaching grammar from text
The text
Should be short and simple -> get to the grammar asap
Should not contain too much unknown vocabulary
Should have a few different examples of the target language
Procedure
Lead in
Exposure to Target Language or Comprehension Work
Ss first need to focus on the general comprehension of the text
Analysis of examples from the text
shift the focus to the grammar (ask Ss to underline the grammar point, write the sentences on the board,...)
Clarification
Controlled practice
Free practice
PLANNING A
PRONUNCIATION LESSON
Views of pronunciation
& teaching pronunciation
Narrow view:
pronunciation as the production of the right sounds in the right order
learning the individual vowels and consonants
Broad view:
pronunciation is an important part of communicative competence.
involves vowels and consonants, and features like word stress, sentencestress, and intonation
--> focus on how pronunciation is really used to communicate
--> T should not separate pronunciation from other language features
A framework to
teach pronunciation
Description & Analysis
Present a feature (when, how it occurs)
Can use charts
Can use inductive or deductive approach
Listening discrimination
Involve contextualized minimal pair discrimination exercises
Ss' task should be clearly defined with the focus on 1-2 features
Controlled practice - focus on form
Guided practice - focus on meaning, grammar, vocabulary, communicative intent and grammar
Communicative practice - a balance between form and meaning
