UK challenges
Resource consumption and sustainability
With the UK's growth in population, resources are being needed ar an increasing rate; and thus a more difficult chance of true sustainibility
Energy issues
a growing population will result in a greater need for more energy
This places a strain on sustainability as most electricity comes from unsustainable sources
Population is growing
Healthcare improvements
MIgration
Natural increase
agriculture
The rising populations will result in the greater need of food and more agriculture being needed. Increase in agriculture will mean more space will be needed for agricultural purposes. This land could result in the destruction of ecosystems. This is not sustainable behaviour.
Housing
More housing will be needed due to the increase in population. This housing will create jobs for many in construction, but will also result in the destruction fo ecosystems, as land will be needed to build these houses. This is also not sustainable behaviour
water
as the demand for water will rise alongside the rising population, marine ecosystems could be damaged; this is not sustainable
This is being combated with the hose pipe ban each time there is a drought
Greenfield and Brownifeld sites
Greenfield
Pros -Cheap, and building on these locations is faster, developers have complete design control as there are no line constraints
Cons- Valuable recreation or agricultural land may be lost, Locations tend to be at the edge of town and commuting into the city centre would take some time and distance.
Brownfield
Pros- Locations like this don't take up precious land for agriculture, land like this helps revive urban areas. There are already services like sewage and water. Land is close to ideal areas, commuting is minimised
Cons- Building here is more expensive as land needs to be cleared. places are run down and unattractive, isn't ideal for investors or stakeholders. There is more pollution generally in these areas
Transport
Improvements to public transport
Settlement, population and economy
Two speed economy
Evidence for a two speed economy
Large construction projects are being created in the south-east like HS2, but there is very little in the north
Management strategies for a two speed economy
