DIAGNOSIS
LOW - DOSE DEXAMETHASONE SUPPRESSION TEST: dexamethsone at night, blood test for cortisol levels.

24 HOUR URINARY FREE CORTISOL TEST: Urine will be collected over 24 hour period to test for cortisol levels.
PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: observe symptoms such as buffalo hump, stretch marks and bruises.
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
When stimulated by ACTH, the adrenal gland produces cortisol and steroid hormone.

TREATMENT
MANAGEMENT
To control and manage the function of the pituitary gland by replacing potassium by a diet containing high protein.

DIET
MONITOR CALORIE INTAKE - Eat healthy to avoid weight gain as it is one of the symptoms of crushing’s syndrome,
AVOID DRINKING ALCOHOL - Associated with increasing levels of cortisol in the body,
MONITOR BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS - As crushing syndrome may result in high blood sugar,
Eat fruits and vegetables, whole grains and fish.
REDUCE SODIUM INTAKE - Since it may lead to high blood pressure, avoid eating food containing a lot of salt.

SURGERY
POST - OPERATIVE CARE

It may take longer to recover after open surgery - patient may be hospitalized for five to ten days and healing takes eight weeks.

PRE- OPERATIVE CARE
Before the surgery the patient may be administered with medication to control symptoms of the tumor.
Patients with crushing syndrome will be administered with extra doses of cortisone a day before surgery.
Patients will also need to take dose of cortisol medication for a few months after surgery until adrenal gland is functioning.
Blood tests, medical evaluation, chest x-ray are collected and done before surgery.
