BLOOD TEST:
Are taken to measure the level of TSH and level of thyroid hormone thyroxine.

Monitor patients respiration e.g. depth, rate, pattern and pulse oximetry.

PROMOTE INTAKE OF FOODS THAT CONTAIN LOW CHOLESTEROL, LOW CALORIES, LOW SATURATED FAT
The patient may have a slow metabolism therefore they will have to eat food that consists of low calories.
SURGERY
PRE - OPERATIVE CARE

If a patient has hypothyroidism already, a TSH test is also performed to check if the treatment is working.
The patient may miss a dose of levothyroxine a day before surgery if they have to fast before surgery.
POST-OPERATION CARE
The patient may experience fatigue, excessive sleeping, constipation, joint pain, lethargy and irritability after surgery.

The patient must be told about importance to complying with the regime, taking the medication daily.
DIET
Iodine - seaweed, fish, dairy, eggs.
Selenium - activates the thyroid hormone e.g. brazil nuts, tuna, sardines, eggs and legumes.

COMPLICATIONS
Cardiovascular problems - may cause pulse to be slow, dysrhythmias and weakened pulse.
Renal complications - can affect kidney functioning because of decreased blood supply to the kidneys.
Nervous system complications - muscle weakness, nerve injury, breathing difficulties and trouble waling.
