Breathing Mechanism
ventilation, respiration= movement of air from out the body into and then out the lungs (brochial tree & alevoli)
-
Inspiration
-
external intercostalis- contraction moves ribs and sternum upward and outward increasing size of thoracic cavity
increase in size of chest cavity reduces pressure within and air enters the lungs at a higher pressure air from outside goes into lower pressure inside lungs
Expiration
Passive process- air moves out of lungs during expiration, thorax returns to its resting size and shape
-
forceful expiration- involves decreasing size of thoracic cavity by these expiratory muscles (coughing, singing, heavy work)
Internal intercostal muscles- contraction depresses rib cage, decreasing frontot back size of thorax
