DIABETIC FOOT
DEFINITION
Complications caused by neuropathy inadequate blood supply, or a combination of both
PRESENTING SIGNS

Pallor when foot is elevated, but when the foot is lowered it becomes red
If the blood supply is impaired, but neurologic function is adequate

Neuropathic ulcers can result from mechanical injury to the foot,such as cuts and burns
When neurological function is impaired, but blood flow is adequate
DIABETIC FOOT CARE
Bathe feet daily and dry well, paying particular attention to in between toes.

Consult a podiatrist for treatment of calluses, corns or ingrown toenails
Inspect feet daily: for colour and temperature changes, swelling, cuts, cracks, redness.

HEALTH EDUCATION
Avoid crossing the legs when seated to prevent diminished blood flow as well as pressure on the nerves

Avoid smoking, as it constricts blood vessels which decreases tissue perfusion
