MACROVASCULAR COMPLICATIONS
DEFINITION
Diseases of large arteries comprise artherosclerosis with deposits of lipids within inner layer of vessel walls( Mogotlane, 2008)
-
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Causing intracellular oedema, which affects cell function
-
Sorbitol, fructose and glucose accumulate in the basement membrane of the cell wall
Sorbitol, and fructose are enzymes that normally convert glucose into other sugars to lower blood glucose
Sustained increases in glucose levels affect the substrates that are used for the formation of cell membranes
Resulting in inadequate oxygenation, nutrition and waste disposals
