Preparation of Salts
-
Insoluble salts
Precipitation
2 solutions are selected
- one reagent contributes the cation, other contributes anion
- eg. (cation) nitrate and sodium (anion)
mix the 2 solutions together, adding one in excess
- ensures that reaction is complete
- other reagent is completely used up
filtration
- residue is insoluble salt formed as precipitate
- filtrate is aqueous solution
wash with distilled water and wiped dry with filter paper
- remove contaminant chemicals on surface of crystals
Examples
Silver and Lead (II) chloride, iodides and bromides
Barium, Calcium (sparingly soluble, mostly insoluble), Lead (II) Sulfate
-
All oxides and hydroxides except group I hydroxides/oxides
- calcium hydroxide/ oxides (sparingly soluble)
- barium hydroxide (sparingly soluble)
