The place is an alive, beloved thing - London itself is almost a character. Where we live is one of the ways of understanding who we are.
Celebration of people's selfhood in vivid relation to what's around them, especially the very ordinary stuff of existence. Novel is greatly enamoured with her social world, and is a commitment to Mrs Dalloway's upper class limited sense of the ordinary - the text is very democratic and has a sense of materialist confidence.
