EMG (electromyograph): is a device that detects, records and amplifies electrical activity in the muscles.
EOG (electrooculograph): is a device that detects, records and amplifies electrical activity in the eyes.

Continuum of Arousal

Arousal refers to the state of being awake and alert. Heightened arousal is referred to as hyperarousal.
Consciousness is our awareness of our own subjective thoughts, feelings and perceptions (internal events) and our surroundings (external stimuli).
Stages of Sleep
REM Sleep -- Rapid eye movement sleep is where memories are forged, and dreams are often remembered. Alpha waves.
Stage 1 Sleep -- Light sleep, alpha waves.
Stage 2 Sleep -- Light sleep, beta waves and sleep spindles.
Stage 3 and 4 Sleep -- Deep sleep, delta waves.
