UP AND ATOM
Compounds
-
Water is a compound because it is made from hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen is listed on the periodic table so it is not an element.
A compound is a substance containing atoms of two or more different elements and these atoms are chemically combined. Water for example is a hydrogen and oxygen compound. Each its molecules comprises of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen.

In some compounds the atoms make large blocks, and in others the atoms make molecules.
-
Atoms
-
-
Atoms are tiny particles that are far too small to see, even with a microscope.
In the scenario that humans were the same size as atoms, the entire population of the world would fit into a box about a thousandth of a millimetre across.
-
-
During a chemical reaction, atoms from elements can combine to form compounds or atoms in compounds can rearrange themselves to make new compounds
-
Elements
-
Air is a mixture, so it doesn't have a definite formula. The amount of water vapour is not as important.
The atoms in a particular element are identical to each other, and differentiate from the atoms of all other elements. Lead and gold for example are elements. One piece of pure gold comprises only atoms of gold. One piece of pure lead comprises only atoms of lead.
The atoms of some elements do not join together, but instead they stay as separate atoms. An example of this would be Helium.
-
The smallest unit of any element that can be considered an element is an atom. For example, if you have one arsenic, it's an atom of arsenic.

Chemical Symbols
-
-
-
Every chemical symbol starts with a capital letter, and in the scenario that there is a second letter, that would be written in lower case.
The same chemical symbols are used all over the world, no matter which language is spoken, which makes them very useful.
-
When a compound is made from two elements, the first part of the name is the name of the metal element and the non-metal element makes the last part of the name.
Molecules
-
The atoms of other elements, join together to make molecules. An example of this would be hydrogen and oxygen.

Chemical Formulae
For a molecule, we use the chemical symbols of the atoms it contains to write down its formula.
The numbers written below the element symbol show when a molecule contains more than one atom of an element.
