Cloning
Pros
- Cloning can be used to replace failing organs. This will diminish the waiting list for organ donations and allow more people to be saved.
- Healing and recovery times could be lowered because of cloning. Using the person’s own cells, they will be able to recover that much faster and that much easier.
Cons
- There would be a lack of diversity in humankind. Scientists believe this lack of diversity will lower the human race’s ability to adapt.
- Along with the ability to clone desired traits, there could be the possibility of people deliberately reproducing undesired traits. This could lead to a rise in malpractices within society.
GMOs
Pros
- GMOs can help increase the nutritional value of foods like gold rice and the size organisms grow
- GMOs can also be used to make plants resistant to disease, pest, and weeds
Cons
- When we genetically modify a plant to resist pest and weeds the pest will modify and become superweeds and superbugs
- We put a lot of power in the people that make GMOs that if they fail then we all fail
Artificial Selection
Pros
- This eliminates the offspring that doesn’t have the
desired trait so that it will more likely show
- It grows plants that are going to get bigger and
have more nutrients
Cons
- When the genetics of a population group are too similar, then there will be a higher risk of mutation.
- When inbreeding happens too frequently, then the offspring tends to have a lower than average lifespan.
Bioremediation
Pros
- Bioremediation requires fewer resources and less energy than conventional technology, and doesn’t produce waste.
- Bioremediation can be tailored to the needs of the polluted site in question and the specific microbes needed to break down the pollutant .
Cons
- Introduces new organism into environments changing
food webs
- If the process is not controlled it is possible the organic contaminants may not be broken down fully resulting in toxic by-products that could be more mobile than the initial contamination
