Biotechnology
Cloning
Pros
With the use of cloning in all organisms, many lives could be saved. Organ replacements area very risky operation that many people have gone through but with cloning you would not need any kind of donor since the organ could simply be made and put back into the patient.
Cloning would also allow for more efficient food production all over the world. If the reproduction of animals is not needing to create another organism then cloning would provide a basically infinite source of food for the world which would have a huge impact on third world countries where starvation is common.
Cons
Cloning comes at the risk of losing the diversity of our current human kind. By cloning, you are making the same thing over and over which would lower the overall diversity of the organisms on our planet.
Because cloning involves placing dna in an embryo it means that part of the cloned figure would have parts of the dna's age. This would upset the aging process in the new organism making it age much faster.
GMOs
Pros
One positive value of GMOs is that they can alter foods to make them healthier for people. Some 500,000 kids go blind each year due to a lack of vitamin A but this can be helped through GMOs. Scientists have developed rice that has lots more Vitamin A in each grain to prevent the loss of sight all over the world.
Another pro that comes from the use of GMOs is that GMOs allow people to genetically modify animals and plants to produce more. Cows have been genetically modified to produce more milk and grow more fat than normal with no harm to the animal. This is also being done to plants like squash so they have a higher chance of surviving droughts. These make the consumption of plants and animals more efficient for everyone.
Cons
GMOs also have many negative factors. One common use of GMOs is to make plants resistant to herbicides and pests. This sounds like a great thing but the leading ingredient in this "herbicide roundup" is glyphosate which stops plants from growing properly, shortening the plants life.
Genetically modified crops do pose a serious threat to farmer sovereignty and to the national food security no matter where they are grown. GMO's could be very harmful to the economy of many companies and make the companies protecting the safety of foods in the US much more difficult and time consuming.
Artificial Selection
Pros
One pro to Artificial Selection is the increase in profit from plants that comes with the use of Artificial selection. Artificial selection increases the size and life of most plants which allows farmers to have a longer growing season and get more from each plant. This makes every one plant worth more than it would have been before Artificial selection which makes brings more profit to the farmer.
Another pro of Artificial selection is its diversity. Artificial selection can be used to create almost anything for almost any type of industry that needs it. Artificial selection is beneficial to almost every industry, making is a very useful thing.
-
Cons
A con of artificial selection is the risk of lessening a gene pool. If genes from two groups are too similar it can create mutations that decrease the diversity of genes from different things and that would not be good.
Artificial selection lowers the overall quality of life for animals and plants. After artificial selection becomes an often thing with a certain species, it messes up its gene pool, shortening life of offspring.
Bioremediation
Pros
Bioremediation uses microorganisms to reduce pollution through the biological degradation of pollutants into non-toxic substances.Bioremediation can help reduce pollution drastically.
Our air is polluted by a variety of harmful organic compounds created by lots of industrial processes. One way Bioremediation helps this is by passing polluted air over a replaceable culture medium containing micro-organisms that degrade contaminants into products such as carbon dioxide, water or salts.
Cons
Bioremediation is a very helpful thing for the environment but it takes a very long time to use. The overall complexity of bioremediation makes it a very time consuming process even with the environment helping it out.
If the process of bioremediation is not well controlled it is possible the organic contaminants of it may not be broken down fully resulting in toxic materials that could be faster moving than the initial contamination. Bioremediation can be very harmful if the human job isn't done well.
