Biotechnology
Cloning
Pro 1:
One pro of cloning is that your cloning could be used for an organ transplant. Two reasons that this is a pro is because you could bring the waitlist down for transplants. It also could mean that you wouldn't have a rejection because it's ypur organ so your body would recognize it.
Pro 2:
Another pro is easier revovery from a traumatic injury. This would be good because when using your own cells you can heal faster. There would be less complications when healing by using your own cells.
Con 1:
One con of cloning is security reasons. Your cells are left everywhere when you do anything so someone can just clone you with your cells. There are no laws that you could defend yourself against your clone sice you are the true clone.
Con 2:
Another con of cloning is that there would be less diversity in the world. If to many people clone then everyone would start to look the same. Scientists think that people couldn't adapt if everyone looked the same.
GMOs
Pro 1:
One pro of GMOs is that they change the organism to they won't have any issues. For example, they are finding GMOs that would not cause an apple to brown and make the foods longer lasting.
Pro 2:
Another pro of GMOs is that they can withstand chemicals like herbicides. This makes the foods safer and healthier to eat because they don't have herbicides on them.
Con 1:
One con of GMOs is that they are the cause of superweeds and superbugs. These can only be killed with chemicals that are more toxic than GMOs. This is why GMOs are a direct extension to chemical agriculture.
Con 2:
A con of GMOs is that some people don't know whether or not they are safe. They wouldn't be sure if the GMOs in what they eat would affect them or not. They don't know if they are safe for them.
Artificial Selection
Pro 1:
One pro of artificial selection is that if you want specific traits for an offspring you will be able to get those quickly. Sice offsprings have a 25% chance of the trait you want so through stages called embryonic you will have a better chance. These stages will eliminate offsprings that don't meet your desired traits.
Pro 2:
A second pro of artificial selection is that the quality of what is being created wil enhace. This could mean that in foods artificial selection could cause then to grow faster and stay fresh longer. Another example is in animals, they could grow stronger and faster, horses could become faster.
Con 1:
One con for artifical selection is that there could be less variation in the gene pool. If the population is to alike this could cause a higer risk of mutation. Harmful mutations mean that species would die out if changes aren't made.
Con 2:
A second con of artificial selection is that the quality of life would go down. This would happen when populations become to alike. Health issues and life span becomes lower when "same-species pollunation" is to frequent.
Bioremediation
Pro 1:
One pro of bioremediation is that it reduces the pollution around the world. They reduce the pollution by turning pollutants into non-toxic substances.
Pro 2:
Another pro of bioremediation is that in the future there will be lots of advantages to it. It requires less resources and less energy than the conventional technology. There are also cost advantages, for example, it is much cheaper.
Con 1:
A con for bioremediation is that not all organisms are biodegradable. If they can't decompose all the organisms that won't fix all the pollution.
Con 2:
Another con to bioremediation is that if it isn't controlled than the pollutants won't break down completely. If they don't completely break down than there can be more issues than before.
