Biotechnology
Cloning
Pros
- Allows farmers to reproduce their most productive livestock to produce safe and healthier food
- Humans are able to increase the population of endangered species
Cons
- There are side effects to the cloning process including and increase in birth size and defects in vital organs, also premature aging and problems with the immune system
- Cloning results in a lack of uniqueness and would end in clones being seen as inhuman compared to real non-cloned humans.
GMOs
Pros
- Allows plants to withstand herbicides and produce insecticides
- Enables scientists to create new organisms, and artificially develop other traits in plants
Cons
- Scientists are still unsure whether or not GMO consumption is safe
- Pose a serious threat to farmer sovereignty and to the national food security of any country where they are grown
Bioremediation
Pros
- Are able to clean up pollution in the soil, air, and water
- Requires fewer resources and less energy, does not accumulate hazardous wastes
Cons
- May result in toxic by-products if not controlled
- Unpredictable as to how chemicals will react to the environment
Artificial Selection
Pros
- It can enhance the quality of what is being created
- It will allow needed traits to be produced quickly and effectively
Cons
- There may be unknown consequences of enhancing specific traits
- Artificial selection lowers the quality of life
