Biotechnology
Cloning
- It has yet to be really successful. It has been tested on some animals, but only a few subjects, such as geckos and sheep. It has not been tested on a human, due to the extreme risk that might lead to death or possibly something worse.
- It could have terrible after-effects. There has been some oppression from scientists, who believe that risking the cloning of humans might result in a faster aging process, disease in the organs, and problems with the immune system.
Pros
- With the use of cloning, animals and maybe humans could be engineered to have specified traits. This could lead to a sturdier, and healthier life, as well as the capability to be able to adapt to changing environments.
- It could be the next step for reproductive technology. This means it could potentially be used to bring back any lost friend or family. Like say, for instance, a mother who lost her child. With cloning, it might be possible to bring that mother's child back.
GMOs
Cons
- Because Biotechnology companies are able to obtain patents that control the use and distribution of their genetically modified seeds, therefore posing a threat to farmers sovereignty and to the national food security in any place they are grown.
- "In March 2015, the World Health Organization determined that the herbicide glyphosate (the key ingredient in Roundup®) is “probably carcinogenic to humans.”'
Pros
- GMOs can create more nutritional foods. With the insertion of nutrients, such as Vitamin A, kids and adults unable to receive Vitamin A through other ways, can get Vitamin A from regular food.
- GMOs can help plants and animals grow faster. This gives the advantage of growing food faster and delivering it to the growing population.
Bioremediation
Pros
- "Bioremediation is not a new technique, but as our knowledge of the underlying microbial reactions grow, our ability to use them to our advantage increases. Frequently, bioremediation requires fewer resources and less energy than conventional technology, and doesn’t accumulate hazardous by-products as waste."
- "Bioremediation can be tailored to the needs of the polluted site in question and the specific microbes needed to break down the pollutant are encouraged by selecting the limiting factor needed to promote their growth. This tailoring may be further improved by using synthetic biology tools to pre-adapt microbes to the pollution in the environment to which they are to be added."
- Bioremediation might not break down waste entirely. This could leave waste and toxins in the water. It could also potentially make a polluted substance even more toxic.
- It has certain limits on the types of contaminants it can remove effectively. There are a few cases that show bioremediation is able to break down non-organic sources, it still tends to work best when it is used to break down organic substance.
Artificial Selection
Cons
- "There can be unanticipated consequences of encouraging a specific trait.
Let’s say there are carrots being created through artificial selection that are narrower, longer, and colored blue. By encouraging these traits, the plants can evolve. When this happens, however, there may also be an increased susceptibility to disease, soil conditions, or other factors that can make it difficult for those carrots to grow. For every action there tends to be an equal and opposite reaction."
2.The quality of life is often reduced through artificial selection.
Although this result isn’t seen right away, it can become problematic once the gene pool becomes too similar. When inbreeding or same-species pollination happens too frequently, then the offspring tends to have a lower than average lifespan. A variety of health problems may also begin to appear.
Pros
1."It can enhance the quality of what is being created." When used, it can make any substance able to be stored longer without rotting or becoming worse. It can also make foods and/or substances grow faster.
- All plants and animals can be used in it. They can be made to further survive the changing world.
