Understanding Interpersonal Communication
Characteristics of Interpersonal Communication:
Interpersonal Communication:
Two-way interaction between people who are part of a close and irreplaceable relationship in which they treat each other as unique individuals.
Cyber Relationship:
An affiliation between people who know each other only in the virtual world.
Example From Text:
A well known figure on Instagram suddenly closed her account because she wanted to break her addiction with social media.
Personal Example:
I spend way too much time participating in online communication, I sometimes want to delete everything on my phone, but I think my addiction it too great to do that.
How We Choose Relational Partners:
Phubbing:
A mixture of the words phone and snubbing, used to describe episodes in which people pay more attention to their devices than they do to the people around them.
Social Exchange Theory:
The idea that we seek out people who can give us rewards that are greater than or equal to the costs we encounter in dealing with them.
Example From Text:
Successful long term relationships depend more on similarities in personalities and communication styles rather than similarities in looks.
Personal Example:
Every relationship that I have seen build off of looks has failed and most relationships I have seen fail have been because of miscommunication.
Types of Interpersonal Relationships:
Family:
A collection of people who share affection and resources and who think of themselves and present themselves as a family.
Intimacy:
A state of closeness between two (or sometimes more) people. Intimacy can be manifested in several ways: physically, intellectually, emotionally, and via shared activities.
Developmental Models:
(of relational maintenance) Theoretical frameworks based on the idea that communication patterns are different in various stages of interpersonal relationships.
Example From Text:
The figure of Knapp's stages of relational development shows how easy it is to grow closer or grow apart from somebody.
Personal Example:
I've done some things to grow apart from somebody without even realizing it until its too late. How we words things has such a big impact on communication.
Communication Patterns in Relationships:
Content Message:
A message that communicates information about the subject being discussed.
Relational Message:
A message that expresses the social relationship between two or more individuals.
Affinity:
The degree to which people like or appreciate one another. As with all relational messages, affinity is usually expressed nonverbally.
Respect:
The degree to which we hold others in esteem.
Immediacy:
The degree of interest and attraction we feel toward and communicate to others. As with all relational messages, immediacy is usually expressed nonverbally.
Control:
The social need to influence others.
Metacommunication:
Messages (usually relational) that refer to other messages; communication about communication.
Self-Disclosure:
The process of deliberately revealing information about oneself that is significant and that would not normally be known to others.
Social Penetration Model:
A theory that describes how intimacy can be achieved via the breadth and depth of self-disclosure.
Breadth (of Self-Disclosure):
The range of topics about which an individual discloses.
Depth (of Self-Disclosure):
The level of personal information a person reveals on a particular topic.
Johari Window:
A model that describes the relationship between self-disclosure and self-awareness.
Dialectical Model:
The perspective that people in virtually all interpersonal relationships must deal with equally important, simultaneous, and opposing forces such as connection and autonomy, predictability and novelty, and openness versus privacy.
Altruistic Lies:
Deception intended to be unmalicious, or even helpful, to the person to whom is it told.
Example From Text:
Even though famous celebrities lives are hidden and seem perfect, sometimes they disclose opposite or unexpected information through their work.
Personal Example:
I don't disclose very much about myself especially hardships but it definitely shows in my music and my writing.
Question One:
Its interesting how fast you can grow apart from someone without even realizing or intending to do so just based on your communication with them.
Question Two:
It bothers me how much our generations are addicted to the virtual world. I wish I could throw it all away sometimes.
Question Three:
I want to know more about self-disclosure, because I do it so much without realizing or intending to do it. It just happens, especially in my creative outlets.
