Hypoparathyroidism
DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
• A positive Trousseau sign for tetany
• A positive Chvosteks sign
• Calcification detected via x-ray.
COLLABORATIVE NURSING CARE
• Care of postoperative patients having thyroidectomy, parathyriodectomy and radical neck distention,
• to detect early signs of hypocalcaemia, tetany, seizures and respiratory difficulties.
• Closely monitor patients on parenteral parathormone for allergic reactions.
PHARMALOGY
• Calcium gluconate (ivi)is kept at bedside
• Parenteral parathormone
• Aluminium hydroxide gel
• Vitamin d
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
• Results in elevated blood phosphate
• And a reduction of blood calcium.
• Absence of parathormone causes decreased absorption of dietary calcium
• And reabsorption of calcium from bone and through the renal tubules.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATION
• Hypocalcemia
• Tetany- general muscle hypertonia
• Anxiety
• Irritability
• Depression and delirium
CAUSES
• Inadequate secretion of parathyroid hormone.
• After interruption of the blood supply
• Or surgical removal of parathyroid gland tissue.
DIET MODIFICATION
• Diet high in calcium
• And low in phosphorus
• Although dairy products are restricted as they contain high phosphorus.
DEFINITION
Deficiency in the parathormone.
