Pre Civil Rights Events
Little Rock Nine
-
Importance:
This event was so important because it showed the lengths southerners would go to in order to prevent integration. It also showed the will power of young African Americans to incite change. And finally, it was an example of the integrity of the US president in their court rulings
Summary:
In 1957 the Little Rock Nine were students selected to attend an Arkansas school after the Brown v Board. They were supposed to be the first of many students to integrate. This plan was stalled because the Governor of Arkansas prevented them from entering the school. They were eventually allowed in when the President interfered and ordered the Arkansas government to integrate. The Little Rock Nine finally entered the school in September of that year.

Dred Scott V Sandford
Purpose: This Court case was important because it furthered tensions between the North and South. Since the decision invalidated the Missouri Compromise of 1820, the compromise helped restrict slavery on certain states, which made many Northern Abolitionists angry. The case became a rallying point for the north and lead to the election of Abraham Lincoln.
-
Summary: During the 1830s, Dred Scott was born into a life of slavery, he lived in Missouri and for a short period of time he resided in Illinois, a free state. When he went back to Missouri, Scott filed a lawsuit stating that he was a free man. He won the first case but then his owner took it up to Supreme Court. The Supreme court argued that the case shouldn't have been brought up because of how African Americans were not citizens. In the end, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the owner and Scott didn't get his freedom.

Great Depression
Everything was difficult for those with money so those without money suffered even more. Discrimination prevented blacks from getting any kind of help from local or federal governments. Tensions were higher than ever and everyone was on edge. You would expect tougher times to create tougher bonds but this is not the case.
-
The great depression was a stock market crash in October of 1929. The market crashed because investors were buying stocks for large amounts and selling stocks for outrageous amounts. "Black Thursday" is when millions of stocks were traded and "Black Tuesday", 5 days later, another couple million stocks were traded. This left lots of shareholders broke or with little money. When Roosevelt took office he created the New Deal and the 1935 Social Security Act. This act did not include farm and domestic work, major sectors in which blacks were employed, giving them no safety net in times of uncertainty.
