Before Civil Rights
Emacipation Proclamation
The Emancipation proclamation was enacted by Abraham Lincoln to make sure that all slaves were freed and this happend after the civil war
This meant that slaves were not property but citizens of he United States but they still weren't treaed with equatlity. It was written in 1863 two years before the law could be enacted because the war did not end until 1865 at the Appatomax Court house. This meant that any man living in the United States was free and anyone born in the United States was free no matter what their race or ehtnicith or color they would be free and not bound to slavery. Although this was the case the Southerners would not welcome the newly free citizens that we're slaves because of hard feelings about the war they're was still hard feelings about it so the African Americans we're not treated equaly an did not have the fair advantages like the whites. The whites had a better education system and everything was now segregated

The event matters by showing how these 4 college students showed courage and knew what was right or what should be right. They also encouraged other people to show what is right as well.
