History
It's a genetic disorder that causes lifelong mental retardation, developmental delays and other problems
In 1866 John Langdon Down, an English physician, associated people with distinct physical features to decreased intelligence ability. He called it “mongoloid” since they had similarities compared to those from Mongolia. The name has been changed to what it is known as now down syndrome.
In 1959, Dr. Lejeune had written an article that showed that the cells of people with Down syndrome contain 47 chromosomes, compared to the usual 46 chromsomes
Soon after it was discovered that chromosome 21 held an extra part or complete part. This lead to the creation of the term Trisomy 21.
Trisomy 21 is the most common form of Down syndrome, caused by an extra copy of chromosome number 21.
