The Early Contemporary Times

1808

Bonaparte invaded Spain. The Spanish people rose up against
the French invasion, which gave rise to the War of Independence.

1812

The first Spanish Constitution was established by the Cortes de Cádiz,which was intentented to defend the rights and liberties of citizens

1814

Spain won the war, and Fernando VII returned to the Spanish throne. He abolished the Constitution and restored absolutism. He ruled till his death in 1833.

1833

After the king’s death, the first Carlist War started. Carlos,Fernando VII's brother,was supported by the absolutists,and Princes Isabel,declared heir,gained the support of the liberals

1843

Isabel II was proclaimed Queen. During her reign, the liberal

politicians formed two parties: the Moderate Liberals and the

Progressives. The Constitution of 1845 was approved.

1873

In 1868 a military group rose up against Queen Isabel II. The

new Constitution of 1869 established a parliamentary monarchy, and

then in 1873 the First Spanish Republic was proclaimed.

1875

A military uprising restored the monarchy, and Alfonso XII,

Isabel II’s son, returned to the Spanish throne. The Constitution of

1876 was approved.
