Sexuality and sexual expression in new media.
Sexual identity and expression in digital media.
the benefits of new media advances to sex and sexuality and the positive aspects it brings
new media, social media, sexuality, and the ways in which all of these impact one another are important to me, they are important to most people I know either directly or indirectly
Media and human sexuality are very provocative and prominent aspects of our lives and of our human experience.
I truthfully didn’t know much about the wide range of human sexuality, or the fluidity of sexuality, or really anything in that regard that wasn’t either rigidly heteronormative, or stereotypically “gay guy.
the representation and sense of community
Access to technology and exposure to sexualized media is accessible to many, many people in our culture, in other industrialized societies around the globe.
Adding the digital and social media component to it complicates it in ways we have not experienced as humans in the past.
Maybe the persons photos of themselves in a bathing suit aren’t just for attention, or to be “slutty” or whatever our initial impressions are. Maybe they are overcoming their body image issues in a unique way.
Stigmatized human sexuality.
possible negative effects our media consumption can have on our ideas of sex and sexuality
our changing attitudes, at least somewhat regarding sexuality.
We have come a long way since the 1950’s when married couples on TV were depicted as sleeping in separate beds.
The second aspect, the changing attitudes regarding sex and sexuality should be important because it easily demonstrates our growth as a nation, our expansion of education, acceptance, and the normalization of frankly, normal aspects of human life that have long been stigmatized.
perhaps in our lifetime we will see the end of stigma surrounding sex, sexuality, sexual expression, etc.
Stigma of online dating.
Impact of sexualized media on the development of children and adolescents.
I have learned how little research actually exists regarding digital media and sexuality and the developmental impact on children.
One of the pieces I have found thus far was conducted by pediatric researchers, who call for greater emphasis on the need for studies of sex/sexuality in digital media and its direct impact on children’s development.
possible negative effects our media consumption can have on our ideas of sex and sexuality
important for parents, guardians, those who care about children, or were one children themselves to understand how these prominent aspects of our culture and lifestyle impact our development, and that these impacts may come with negative consequences.
If we understand what these are, what they may look like, and how they can come about, maybe we can find ways to educate ourselves and others without adding additional stigmatization or severing any trust that is built.
Consumption of sexualized media on all children.
Impact of sexualized media on marginalized groups.
Consumption of sexualized media on LGBTQ children specifically.
the good it brings to LGBTQ individuals, individuals who defy social norms, non-binary individuals, and those who simply want to learn more about these things, and the representation that social media and digital media has given to many of these groups.
the representation and sense of community.
The positive aspect of representation and community it builds for marginalized groups of people should matter to others, because as humans, we have empathy for our fellow humans.
Maybe the person discussing their sexual identity with followers on social media took a very long time to discover who they were, and to come to terms with that.
Stigma of LGBTQ online dating.
the fact that new media and digital media platforms give --- non straight/non-heteronormative/non-binary individuals to express themselves as individuals and to connect with others who share their interests or similar experiences.
