Pro-Life Propaganda in Visual Culture
Historical Context
Court Cases
Roe v Wade: A court case that responded to an abortion ban in Texas in which abortion was considered right to privacy by the Supreme court.
Roe v Wade in visual culture: Out of all of the Court cases, Roe v Wade is the most symbolic and heavily referenced in the conversation about women's reproductive rights, on both sides.
Planned Parenthood v Casey: This court case upheld the right to abortion as stated in Roe v Wade, but did allow for restriction and pro-life legislation.
Statistics
Real Statistics from World Health Organization: Worldwide: 42 million women choose abortion, 20 million are unsafe and 68 thousand women die every year from unsafe abortion
-
false statistics are often used by pro-life advocates to make people reconsider their stance on abortion
The Heartbeat Bills
The Heartbeat Bills were prominent in 2019, making it so that pregnancy could not be terminated after 6 weeks.
Many women do not even know that they are pregnant at this point, thus making it an extreme piece of pro-life legislation, and threatening Roe v Wade.
The Heartbeat Bills were blocked by the Supreme Court, however some states such as Tennessee are still trying to push for it.
Pro-life and the church
Pro-life is very closely linked to the church and the idea that God created all life. This is used in pro-life propaganda as almost a call to action for christians to defend pro-life values
Some politicians have cited this as a reason for pro-life legislation, though this comes into direct conflict with the boundaries between church and state.

Implications for Society
Rape Culture: "an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular culture"(Marshall University)
Through making abortion illegal and inaccessible, and criminalizing it, the message is sent that a women's ability to express sexuality is criminal.
Trans Rights
*
The issue of access to abortion and pro-life propaganda extends beyond women. People who are trans also need this right; aside from the fact that they should not be forced into pregnancy, pregnancy can cause dysphoria and additional problems for people who are trans.

Personal Statement of Interest:The issue of Pro-Life Propaganda is very important to me because I feel like it is an issue central to women's rights and the intersection of church and state. It is essential that the government does not get involved in a woman's control over their own body, and instead protects what should be considered a human right. Pro-Life propaganda exemplifies the use of fear and religion to influence people's opinion, which I think shows how important it is to consider what we see everyday in visual culture.
