Toxic Masculinity: Overarching Effect in Society and Relationships
EUPHORIA
:
MASCULINITY: CONCEPTUALIZED
A photographer who has worked several projects challenging gender norms. She says that "society tells boy to hold back the tears..." The idea of hyper masculinity is constantly enforced in young boys... -Maud Fernhout. (2015, November 29). What 'Real' Men Cry Like. Retrieved from

Her project:
What 'Real' Men Cry Like
Job (18)
For me, crying is not showing your weakness. When I cry, I can accept my feelings and I'm able to continue. It makes me stronger.
Aditya (19)
"I used to see myself as strong because I did not cry; now I feel weak because I cannot cry."
Maurits (19)
The only quote that I have ever had on my wall is one from my favorite TV-show;
Q: 'does it hurt?'
A: 'yes, beautifully'
This two-sentence conversation shows me hat crying is not at all a show of weakness, but rather a moment where someone embraces their emotions, which, if anything, is a sign of strength and should be celebrated.
Relationship with Maddy Perez
He is extremely "protective" over his girlfriend; however, their relationship is soon revealed to be toxic as his masculine qualities begin to overwhelm the idea of 'his love.' He is possessive and violent with her, often having rough sex with her and pinning her down in the bed, as well as choking her in a fit of anger. His relationship with his father merely encourages his views on women and their symbol of being weak and helpless.
The final breakdown: His character has been distinguished as borderline psychopathic and extremely masculine. However, the show breaks him away from the "stereotypical jock" label as he suffers an immense breakdown that most viewers didn't expect. The quiet rage and heartbreak over not knowing his own identity finally explodes outward; he has a damaged relationship with his girlfriend where he has finally hurt her, he has been violent towards others, and he feels weak and feeble under his father's grasp.

Demonstrating Strength and Toughness
Woman's reluctance to speak about violence in relationship. Damages relationship between a man and a woman.
Hyper masculinity
Exaggerating Stereotype of Masculinity; no femininity.
Established Exterior of strength and toughness vs. lack of compassion, emotion, and empathy.
In no way , shape, or form can a man have any similarities to a woman based on traditional gender norms
.
This man is simply fulfilling a role in society- being the stronger one, but ultimately his own strength begins an oppression on himself.

" “You’ll see kindergarten and first-grade boys bringing stuffed animals from home to comfort them amid heir fear of the social demands of school. They’ll even hold hands and put their arms around other boys and girls to show affection and express joy. By second grade, male indoctrination begins. Boys are sissies it hey show fear, pain, or heaven forbid the most taboo expression of all: crying” (Audrey Nelson). -Maud Fernhout. (2015, November 29). What 'Real' Men Cry Like. Retrieved from

Characterizing Nate Jacobs
"poster boy" and "stereotypical jock" of the Euphoria television show
Nate Jacobs- "loved the crowds" "He didn't like his mother because she was weak and a pushover" "Had a good relationship with his father" (Rue Bennet, Euphoria) Episode 2 of Euphoria.
Toxic Masculinity Existing in Visual Culture
The importance: Boys can cry. They can care. They can show empathy and compassion towards others. They can maintain a healthy relationship with women. Societal control needs to end as well as the gender norms that indeed normalize gender masculinity.
Boys having strength, courage, and invincibility.
Never allowed to portray true emotions.
Biology doesn't affect the outcome of men being more emotional, but societal control does.
This is how masculinity becomes toxic to males in society and the idea of toxic masculinity being constantly advertised.
Remembering the
Human Condition.
Men
cry
too.
Likes and Dislikes in Women
"Tennis Skirts, Heels, Hated Sneakers, Liked Thigh Gaps, Hated cankles, Liked long necks, slender shoulders, Hated girls who sat like boys, talked like boys, acted like boys, & he hated body hair" (Rue Bennet, Euphoria.) Episode 2 of Euphoria
