- - - - The Russian army continued to rebuild its ranks that Germany couldn't continue to fight anymore.
        
        Germany began to become concerned with Southeast and Southwest Asia.
- - - - They believed that they could pull this off because of how behind Russia was when it came to railroad systems.
      - Even with that, speed was still important when it came to the plan to ensure a quick victory over France
      - Early September, German forces managed to sweep through France and were towards the outskirts of Paris.
      - However, the Allies ended up regrouping on September 5th, and attacked the German army northeast of Paris in the valley of the Marne River
      - More than 600 taxicabs rushed soldiers from Paris to the field for reinforcements. The Germans defeat left the Schlieffen Plan in shambles, as a swift western victory no longer seemed like an option
      - After four days of war, the German generals ordered their soldiers to retreat

      - The plan was to attack and defeat France in the West and rush east to take on Russia.

        Soon there were new tools of war, like machine guns, poison gas, armored tanks, and large artillery.
        
        This moved the war a lot faster than expected.
        
        The slaughter rate reached it's peak in 1916. 300,000 men died on each side. The Battle of the Somme left more than half a million casualties.
        
        Value: The importance, worth or usefulness of something. The Germans and British only gained 4-5 miles of land which doesn't seem like enough value compared to all the lives loss.
        
        In the first day of battle alone, 20,000 British soldiers were killed.
        
        In the end, Germany advanced 4 miles in Verdun and the British gained 5 miles in the Somme Valley
        
        Why were land gains so small? They had to run between trenches which was dangerous to go through.
