Concerns
How do the pesticides work
Quote:
“Monsanto's bug-killing corn is so widely used that the corn rootworm is developing a resistance. As a result, it now requires more pesticides” (GMO and engineered food).
If the corn can make its own pesticides what can stop evolution from killing us because the corn might create a different pesticide to kill bugs but create something else to kill humans.
Affects animals or plants
Accidental cross contamination can affect the non-GM crops because the GM crops can affect the life of other organisms.
GMO foods have an effect on animals and GMO animals like cows are just in machines waiting to be killed. Animals also have feelings like humans but we may not notice and take their food for granted and not even say thank you to the food they're about to eat.
Possible allergies
Quote:
"For example, if a banana gene is added to corn, then it could cause an allergic reaction in people with rare banana allergies" (GMO day two).
If GMO foods have different genes from other plants people can have allergies to that food and they won't even know that there is a food that they're allergic to. That is a danger because in America GMO companies don't have to label the GMO foods.
Benefits
Healthier
Quote:
“Genetically engineering food could help feed the 800 million undernourished people in the world” (GMO day two).
Statistics
: In 2018 239.1 million people in Africa were undernourished. 250,000 to 300,000 children every year go blind because of vitamin A deficiency.
GMO's are cheaper than organic food and they have more nutrients so that helps the poor and undernourished like this small child. There is a GMO rice that is called golden rice and in Africa they can grow it for free for the children can't go blind or anything, children in Africa go blind because of the lack of vitamin A but with this golden rice no more children can suffer and look at this poor child, with that golden rice he won't lose his sight or be malnourished.
Resistant against disease
Quote:
“Through genetic engineering plant breeders can enable plants to resist certain diseases, like the papaya ringspot virus (PRSV). The GM Rainbow Papaya, developed to be resistant to PRSV, allowed Hawaiian papaya farmers to recover from an outbreak of this devastating disease that crippled their industry” (GMO Basics).
GMO crops now have vaccines in them so it is less expensive for the families and it can families save much money because then they won't have to spend as much money getting their children vaccines because the children got sick. Also other plants like the Hawaiian papaya that was going to go extinct but with genetics of other plants humans saved the fruit from extinction.
Reduced food waste
Quote:
“Genetic engineering has been used to modify potatoes and apples in order to eliminate superficial browning and bruising (potato only) when the produce is cut or handled. These traits can help reduce the amount of produce thrown away by producers, processors, retailers and consumers” (GMO Basics).
GMO's also help save natural life and land but it has also helped save some foods like papaya. Other organisms like the american chestnut tree
Saves the environment
GMO foods have saved a lot of nature and it reduces fuel use, GMO itself takes 10 million cars off the road every year.
Evidence:
As seen here the website Forbes stated "In total, in 2014, GM crops reduced atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions by 5.2 million pounds (2.4 billion kg) through conservation tillage and also decreased fuel use. This reduction is the equivalent to taking nearly 10 million cars off the road for one year."
Claim
: One concerning topic about GMOs is that people can have allergies to that GMO food.
Evidence: "For example, if a banana gene is added to corn, then it could cause an allergic reaction in people with rare banana allergies" (
GMO day two
).

COUNTERCLAIM
Like you said the banana allergy is rare and its side effects are ------>
but none of these side affects are lethal.
itching or swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat.
hives.
swollen, itchy, or red eyes.
runny nose or sneezing.
shortness of breath.
abdominal pain, vomiting, or diarrhea.
Side effects
COUNTERARGUMENT(Angel R)
: Yes the banana allergy is rare and none of those are lethal but the people can get lost if they're in the wild and eat some GMO fruit that has a banana gene and they're out in the wild so they will have no help available then they might get lost and their bowels can explode and that can be threatening.
Claim
: GMOs are healthier and can help the poor in need of food and nutrients that the poor are lacking.
Counterclaim(Juan R)
Yes but some people can be allergic to the chemicals in the GMOs. and if the person doesn't treat the allergy they might go into anaphylactic shock
Counterargument(Angel R)
: Yes but there is no chemicals in the GMO foods except for the pesticides that the GMO crop
CREATES ITSELF
, also if a person was allergic to it then they would probably have an EpiPen on them.
