Concerns
May cause Allergies
"Transferring genes into an organism means the organism now contains new proteins, which could cause an allergic response where a threat wasn't present before"
Toxic
quote:"People independently reported toxic effects caused by GMOs. The IRT stated that the toxicity was the result of genetic modification techniques and not a specific case for that particular potato. They claimed the process of making the GMO caused it to be toxic and thus all GMOs were high risk for toxicity" (Harvard)
unwanted transfer
Some foods have seeds, which could be bad if they are GMO's. When the foods have different genes it could transfer to a random plant which could evolve to have unwanted things.
Claim: GMO's could mix with other foods which could add some unwanted genes that could potentially harm humans.
evidence: In the BIll Nye video he gives an example stating that if there is a GMO in some crops that kill bees. The GMO genes could go with the seeds in the air and change the genes in some flowers so that the flowers kill the bees.
Tyler Haines counterclaim: I counterclaim that we would not be hurt, due to two mixed foods, and GM crops
My evidence for this counterclaim is that if we are only farming foods that cannot hurt us, and they mix they will not hurts us because they are both safe for human consumption
Jackson Reyes counter-argument: What about the people who have allergies, if a person has an allergy to corn and he/she eats a GM watermelon with a corn.
Claim:GMO's eliminate the luck factor in the evolution in foods which could very well help with things like world hunger.
Evidence: In the Ted Ed video they say that we used luck for centuries to get better crops but now we can modify them as we like.
Tyler Haines Counterclaim: I counterclaim that they would not eliminate the luck factor, because if we know the correct genes, than we can make a replica plant, and breed them
Tyler Haines Counterclaim Evidence: My evidence for this counterclaim is that if we can add genes from different plants, than Shirley we can just generate one perfect plant, and then take that plant, and make another with the exact same genes.
Jackson Reyes Counter-argument: you just proved me right, I said that you could eliminate the luck factor in the evolution of plants, you said that we could make one perfect plant instead of a lot of breeding.
