a comparison of the two leading civil rights groups in the 1960's to end segregation
SCLC: founded by Martin Luther King Jr. and civil rights leaders, goal was to carry on nonviolent crusades against the evils of second class citizenship
SNCC: founded by African American and White college students, tried to speed up changes mandated by Brown v. Board Of Education in 1960's and were but in danger because of taking risks
Sibley Commission
made in 1960
Governor Ernest Vandiver Jr. forced to decide between closing public schools or complying with a federal order to desegregate them
avoided a showdown between the running offices and ended massive resistance to desegregation
Civil Rights of 1964
ended segregation in public facilities and banned unemployment discrimination
first proposed by President John F. Kennedy that survived strong opposition, after Lyndon B. Johnson signed it and congress expanded it
no longer could blacks and other minorities be denied service simply based on their color of skin, race, culture, etc.
Albany Movement
began in fall 1961, ended summer 1962
the first mass movement in the modern civil rights era to have the goal accomplished of desegregation of an entire community
resulted in jailing more than 1,000 African Americans in Albany- all were arrested in one whole week
Brown vs. Board Of Education
made in 1954
held that the racial segregation of children in public schools violated the Equal Protection Clause
aka one of the greatest supreme court decisions made in the 20th century
State Flag
on May 8th, 2003, Governor Sonny Perdue signed legislation creating a new flag
lead the nation in the number and variety of different state flags
most militia flags were sewn by members' wives or even other women in the community
