The Great War Begins
In response to declaring war, Russia started moving its army to the Russian-Austrian border

Germany and Austria-Hungary were in an alliance called Central Powers, because their location was in the heart of Europe
Later in the war Bulgaria and Ottoman Empire would join Central Powers hoping to regain their lost territory

Great Britain, France and Russia would form an alliance called the Allied Powers or Allies
Later Japan would join them and so would Italy even though they used to be aligned with Germany and Austria-Hungary
In the summer of 1914, soldiers marched to battle. They were convinced the war was going to be short
Great Britains foreign minister, Sir Edward Grey, saw the horror that would come with this war, he said “The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.”
