Europe Plunges Into War

A Bloody Stalemate
Schlieffen Plan: Plan for Germany to fight a war on two fronts. Fight and beat France quick, then rush to Russia (thought this would work because Russia was behind in transport).
Germany quickly attacked outside of Paris, it had seemed they were going to win, but Allies through everything they had at Germany. German generals ordered a retreat.
Schlieffen Plan was in shambles and Russia had already started invading the in the East. Germany sent reinforcements there and war on the Western Front was stalled.

Escalation: The loss on the German side would make this war much harder to fight. Not to mention that Russia's troops gathered and started invading Russia quickly.
Early 1915 brought trench warfare. No matter where soldiers were, there was high risk of death. Either artillery fire or machine-gun fire would take soldiers out.

Soldiers were covered with mud and rats, it was a living hell in the trenches. Western Front had been labeled "terrain of death."
War: Trench warfare was a style of war that the Germans, French, and British were all engaging in. Germany was fighting against France and Great Britain.

Any new military technology would create more losses on both sides. In February 1916, Germans launched a huge attack against the French. Each lost 300,000+ men.
The British attacked Germans northwest of Verdun in July. More than 20,000 were lost on the first day. The Battle of Somme ended in November with 5,000,000+ casualties.
