Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim and benchmark assessments are a type of assessment which are given to students on predetermined times of the year in order to monitor students learning. These assessments usually cover an entire school subject.
STAAR: This benchmark assessment is the standardized test used in Texas in order to monitor student learning. STAAR tests are given starting in 3rd grade in April and May.
MAP: This benchmark assessment is used nationwide in order to monitor student growth in specific subjects. MAP testing typically occurs three times a year and can monitor student growth from kindergarten through grade 12 in all subjects.
Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are used throughout instruction in order to assess student knowledge, provide feedback, and monitor and adjust instruction. Formative assessments are usually low risk and little weight is placed on grades if they are taken from the assessments.
Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down: This formative assessment is used with larger groups to gauge understanding all at once. The teacher says specific true or false statements and students give a thumbs up if they agree with the statement and thumbs down if they do not agree. This assessment is also very good when used throughout discussions and for classroom argumentation.
Exit Tickets: This formative assessment is used to monitor student learning within a unit. Students are posed with a specific task or question to answer before the conclusion of a lesson or class. Students can write exit ticket answers on sticky notes and attach to the doorframe or whiteboard for easy collection.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments are a type of assessment used in classrooms where students are required to perform a task rather than answer questions. This type of assessment can be used for all subjects in order to replace the typical question and answer type assessment.
Make a Ad: This type of performance assessment will have students make an advertisement in order to practice the composition of persuasive writing. Students will work in teams to create a poster, flyer, or television ad to present to the class.
Experiments: This type of performance assessment can either be teacher created or can be inquiry based in order to have students create their own experiment. Experiments must have an essential question or task to be completed.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used to help teachers recognize and understand student misconceptions, understandings, and gaps in knowledge about a certain topic.
Running Records: This type of diagnostic assessment is used to help teachers understand a student's reading abilities and/or focus areas. Teachers typically administer running records throughout the school year to monitor student's reading level growth and progress as well.
Pre-Assessments: This type of diagnostic assessment can be given in many forms such as short quizzes or even class discussions. Pre-Assessments help teachers assess student's understanding about specific topics before instruction.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used at the end of a unit or topic to assess student's understanding or misconceptions. The opposite of formative assessments, summative assessments are high risk and usually involve a high-grade weight.
Unit Assessments: This summative assessment can be created by the teacher or mandated by a district to monitor students progress throughout the school year. Unit assessments are usually a culmination of several topics covered throughout a period of time such as a six-week period.
Reflection Essay: This summative assessment can be used to assess students understanding and misconceptions on a variety of topics. Students will write reflection essays to help the teacher know what they understand about a topic, book, or unit covered in the classroom.
