Content Message
Definition:
A message that communicates information about the subject being discussed
Textbook ex:
Focuses on the subject being discussed
Own ex:
When sending an email its main focus is on the subject which the message contains
Relational Message
Definition:
A message that expresses the social relationship between two or more individuals
Textbook ex:
Statements about how the parties feel towards one another
Own ex:
I asked my boyfriend if he loved me to see if we were on the same page in our relationship
Affinity
Definition:
The degree to which people like or appreciate one another. As with all relational messages affinity is usually expressed nonverbally
Textbook ex:
Clues that are nonverbal such as a pat on the back or a friendly smile
Own ex:
When I am proud of the students I tutor I give them a high five
Respect
Definition:
The degree to which we hold others in esteem
Textbook ex:
respecting your boss or teacher without liking him or her
Own ex:
I show a respect towards my moms friends even though I don't particularly like them as a person
Immediacy
Definition:
The degree of interests and attraction we feel toward and communication to others. As with all relational messages, immediacy is usually expressed nonverbally
Textbook ex:
You may like someone but if you don't communicate or demonstrate that feeling towards the person immediacy will be low
Own ex:
I tell my parents, siblings and my boyfriend every single day I love them and give them a hug each time I see them
Control
Definition:
The social need to influence others
Textbook ex:
You probably won't be offended when a boss tells you to do a certain job because you agree supervisors have the right to direct employees
