Ionic compounds

-
-
One with less dots turns positive & the one with full shell turns negative once dot or dots are passed over
-
ide after second word in chemical name (sometimes at the begging of the second word if added more compounds)
-
Chemical Bonding
Covalent bonds: bonds between atoms that share electrons in order to complete the valence shells of each atom
Polar bonds: (sometimes called hydrogen bonds)- involve a bond between molecules that have opposite ionic bonds
Ionic bond: bonds between ionic atoms with opposite charges/ transfer of electrons from one atom to another so they both have complete valence

Bohr Model

-
Always 2 on the first shell, then 8 on the rest except outer shell (depending on the # of dots)
-
Three parts of an Atom
- Electron: it has a negative charged electric charge (-), but almost does not have mass. Located outside the nucleus.
- Neutron: it has no electric charge, but has a mass of one atomic unit. located in the nucleus
- Proton: it has a positive electric charge (+), an atomic mass of one atomic unit & is located in the very center of an atom
States of Matter
Gaseous matter is composed of particles packed so loosely that it has neither a defined shape nor a defined volume
liquid substance that flows and keeps no definite shape because its molecules are loosely packed and constantly moving. It takes the shape of its container but maintains constant volume.
Solid matter is composed of tightly packed particles. A solid will retain its shape; the particles are not free to move around.
