GI Bleeding
Upper GI tract bleed (vomiting blood)
Injury inside of the GI tract or underlying disease causes accumulation of blood particles.
Insertion of NG tube to evaluate bleeding source
Possible endoscopy to view the GI tract
Treat the cause!!
Monitor VS closely (hypovolemia)
Monitoring cardiac rythym (unstable pt) hypovolemia
Monitor Hgb values - oxygenation capabilities
Monitor stools (black , tarry stools)
Possible administration of protonix- reduces acid in stomach to help ulcerations
Administer replacement fluids
Monitor I&O, and hydration status
Possible blood administration- blood loss
Monitor closely for reactions to blood administration (
Allergic rxn- slow rate, administer Benadryl
Hemolytic rxn (blood cells lysing )
Stop transfusion. Maintain airway and administer NS
Need baseline VS; monitor closely for 15 min
Found covered in bloody vomit
